Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan suggests DRUG LEGALIZATION!

Kofi Annan

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan wrote an essay on Der Spiegel’s website on the need to end the global “War on Drugs” and delineates that international drug policies are more dangerous than the drugs themselves.

He stated that War on Drugs has helped to create a cosmic, international criminal market in drugs that fuels violence, corruption and instability.

He believes that drugs has destroyed many lives, but wrong government policies has destroyed many more.

Trillions of dollars have been wasted, millions of people have been incarcerated, thousands have died and countless lives have been destroyed in the name of fighting a War on Drugs, which is a war that cannot be won.

Annan laid out four steps for addressing the cataclysm and unintended aftermath of a failed War on Drugs. He stated:

  • Decriminalize personal drug use.

  • Accept that a drug-free world is an illusion.

  • Look at regulation and public education rather than the total suppression of drugs, which we know will not work.

  • Recognize that drugs must be regulated precisely because they are risky.

Annan urges governments around the world to acknowledge that legalizing and regulating drugs will save many lives, at a special session on Drugs in the United Nations General Assembly between April 19 and 21, 2016
