Nigeria's best pickup truck 'Hilux' celebrates 50 years

The popular 'Hilux' pickup, a reliable and durable truck which is mostly used by the military forces and oil companies in Nigeria, has served the world on-road and off-road for 50 years.

Lest I forget, the truck is also used by VIP's in Nigeria who place sirens on top of it and oppress other road users with their siren and horn.

The Hilux which was manufactured by the Japanese, was first unveiled in March 1968, however it was birthed to replace two separate pickup model lines under Toyota's lineup.

The Hilux truck spans through eight generations, having tremendous impact on the way driving is known for.

In 1972, the Hilux truck was offered with a two-liter engine. The next truck that followed brought about the introduction of the four-wheel-drive for the first time ever. In 1978 the Hilux took a new turn as it was not just used for the dirty work of going off road, or transporting of goods and services, but the luxury side of it came into reality alongside the automatic transmission.

The Hilux has encountered several transformations up until 2005 when its production ceased in Japan. In 2015 it was reintroduced into the market but was not manufactured in Japan again, rather it was manufactured in USA and South Africa.
