Port Harcourt The So Called Garden City Is Now A Very Dirty City. Thanks To The Rivers State Government
Port Harcourt which is a mega city located in Rivers State the South South region of Nigeria, has been regarded as the Garden City of Nigeria, but as of today it has lost that title in reality.
The way people dispose waste products in the city is very disheartening. The painful part is that the Rivers State Government approves the dumping of waste products beside major roads and dividers of the roads which leads to terrible diseases, sicknesses and destroys the beauty of the city.
So at the moment Port Harcourt cannot be referred to as the Garden City, rather it is the Dirty City.
Over the last two years there has been a major air pollution hovering over Port Harcourt and its environs which is referred to as black soot. The black soot is caused by illegal refining of crude oil, which leaves little black particles scattered around the environment. This has led to air and water pollution.

We are yet to get an information from the Commissioner of Environment 'Roseline Konya' about the strategies to restore Port Harcourt back to its Garden City status.
It is important to know that the earth and its natural processes are considered to be a delicate system, and with humans, animals and plants to reside and call earth home, the environment has its key role, which implies that if the water and air in the environment is contaminated, it will have a ripple effect on humans, plants and animals, because they depend on water and air for survival
Steps to dispose waste properly:
- There should be the provision of waste containers
- Citizens must bag their waste before disposal
- Cameras should be at the designated waste container centers for easy identification of vandals
- The black soot source should be located and destroyed, also perpetrators of the evil act should be brought to justice
- Citizens should be enlightened via one-on-one interaction, radio awareness, television advertisement, and social media awareness on the ways to dispose different types of waste products, and its adverse effect if not dispose properly
- Recycling of waste should be encouraged
- Also according to a recent research, sewage waste products can be transformed to clean drinking water. Bill Gates the chairman of Microsoft has drank sewage treated water. So this aspect can be harnessed in Port Harcourt
