The State Of Waste Management On Nigerian Roads
Hello everyone, before we delve into the waste management on Nigerian roads, let us define waste. Waste is any substance which is discarded after its primary use. Which means when something has been used and is no longer needed, it will be regarded as waste.
The following are examples of waste products: used sachet water (pure water), used chewing gum, used biscuit paper, used groundnut peels, banana peels, unfinished food, used paper bag etc.
In Nigeria, most people are not enlightened on proper waste disposal, so they throw away waste products on the road while they are walking along the road or through the window of a moving vehicle, and make the environment messed up, which can also lead to terrible life threatening diseases such as cancer which has become a very popular disease in Nigeria even present with children.
When waste is not well managed, it can attract rodents and insects, which can harbour gastrointestinal parasites, yellow fever, worms, the plague and other conditions for humans, and exposure to hazardous wastes, particular when they are burned, can cause various other diseases including cancers.
They best way to get rid of waste should be done through availability of waste cans around every city, then some specific people will need to be assigned to take those wastes with wastes trucks, maybe weekly or depending on the amount of waste accumulated. The waste products should then be transported to a recycling centre, when sorted out, the recycled waste can be reused, while the waste products that cannot be recycled will need to be destroyed in an incinerator.
