The Safety System In The Self Driving Car that Killed A Pedestrian Was Disabled By Uber
In the self driving car (Volvo XC90) which is enhanced by ride sharing service 'Uber', a standard safety system was disabled during a self driving test. Apparently Uber decided to disable the system because they were testing the car.
It didn't payoff as there was a crash which claimed the life of a lady that was rolling her bicycle on the sidewalk of the road. It was the first time that a self driving car killed a pedestrian.
This story was revealed by Aptiv, the company that supplies Volvo's radar and camera. Also Intel the supplier of chips and sensors for collision-avoidance defended themselves by playing a video which revealed that the software detected the pedestrian seconds before impact.
Volvo and Uber are yet to release statements concerning this issue. However Uber's license to test self driving cars in Arizona has been revoked, and it doesn't look like they will get it back anytime soon.
